Description
Iotape (Iotape), also known as Aytap (Aytap), is an ancient city on the Mediterranean coast, 33 km from Alanya and 10 km from Gazipaşa. Founded in 52 AD by King Antiochus IV of Commagene in honor of his wife Julia Iotape, the city was an important trading hub on the Silk Road and flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
Iotape served as a safe harbor and trading center. It retains the acropolis on a high promontory with powerful walls, temples, Roman baths with mosaics, and a necropolis with richly decorated tombs.
Today, the ruins of Iotape are impressive: remnants of temples, baths, and streets attract tourists. Swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the bay adds to the enjoyment. The paved roads and sewage system, indicative of advanced engineering, are impressive.
Iotape is a gem for history and archaeology enthusiasts. The city offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
