Description
The Church of St. George in Alanya is a unique historical monument. According to legend, St. George protected the village from bandits. The church was built in the 8th century, and a male monastery was established nearby in the 13th century. In 1873, the church was completed but remained abandoned for a long time. In 2015, it was renovated, bringing it back to life. Now, cultural events and services, including a liturgy on the first Sunday of every month, are held here. The wooden vaulted ceiling and the kliros with an eight-pointed star have been well-preserved. Visiting the church feels like stepping back in time, as if the events of centuries ago happened only yesterday. You can reach the church by minibus No. 5 and No. 7 from Alanya center. Get off at the "School" stop in Tepe Mahallesi. Walk around the pink school building on the left and follow the "HIDIR ILYAS" sign for about 2.5 km to the crossroads, where you will see the church.
