Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi) is a significant historical monument on the southern coast of Turkey. The medieval fortress stands on a rocky peninsula above the Mediterranean Sea, showcasing Seljuk architecture.
The castle's history dates back to the Hellenistic period, but it gained its current form in the 13th century under the Seljuks. In 1221, Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I captured Alanya and made the castle his winter residence. During this period, the Red Tower (Kızılkule) and fortified walls stretching 6.5 km were built.
The castle includes:
Red Tower (Kızılkule): Built in 1226, a symbol of Alanya.
Suleymaniye Mosque (Suleymaniye Mosque): Built in the 16th century.
Saint George Church (Saint George Church): Byzantine period.
Palace of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I.
Covered bazaar, arsenal, and mint.
The castle is accessible by road or cable car. It is open year-round, offering a chance to immerse in history and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
