Description
The ancient city of Syedra is located on the southern coast of Turkey, 20 km from Alanya and 10 km from Gazipaşa, on the Asar hill. Founded in the 7th century BC, Syedra thrived in the 2nd-4th centuries AD as part of the Roman province of Cilicia. In the 1st century BC, Syedra is mentioned by Roman historians as the site of Pompey's last council before his trip to Egypt. In 194 AD, Emperor Septimius Severus praised the inhabitants for repelling pirate attacks, a letter commemorating this event is carved in stone and kept in the Alanya Museum. The city preserves baths, a gymnasium, a colonnaded street, water cisterns, a temple, a Byzantine church, and an olive oil workshop. Ruins of Roman houses, workshops, and a baptismal cave with frescoes are also visible. These structures and numerous inscriptions testify to Syedra's significance in ancient times.
