Wicked
The film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, created by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, first performed in 2003, tells the story of the witches of Oz, Elphaba and Glinda.
In Wicked, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winning actress Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with extraordinary green skin who has yet to discover her true power. Grammy-winning artist Ariana Grande, whose albums have sold over two million copies, plays Glinda, a popular young woman surrounded by privilege and ambition, yet unaware of her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the magical land of Oz, where an unusual but deep friendship forms between them. After an encounter with the great Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads, and their lives take drastically different paths. Glinda’s relentless desire for popularity leads her to be seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to stay true to herself and those around her results in unexpected and shocking consequences. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately lead them to fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
