Avocado harvest has begun in Alanya

In Alanya, which accounts for approximately 80% of avocado production in Turkey, the avocado harvest has begun. Avocados are grown on an area of 17,000 decares, with a production target of 150 million fruits this year. Avocados are also being exported to countries such as Russia, Georgia, and Iran.

The avocado harvest season has started in Alanya. The production of this geographically indicated fruit is increasing every year. This year, 150 million avocados are planned to be produced in the district. Wholesale prices range between 30 to 40 TL depending on the quality, while retail prices are between 40 to 50 TL. Avocados have also started being exported to Russia, Georgia, and Iran.

Tahir Göktepe, President of the Alanya Chamber of Agriculture, stated that there are 2,700 avocado producers in the district. He highlighted that despite the challenges, producers are working tirelessly to deliver the most reliable food from the farm to the table. Currently, avocado production is taking place on 17,000 decares of land, and an export potential has been created, primarily targeting Russia, Ukraine, and other neighboring countries. The European market has also begun to open. The association emphasizes food reliability and is leveraging government support.

Hilmi Sevilgen, President of the Alanya Avocado Producers Association, mentioned that the harvest began at the end of August and September, initially with the Clifton variety. This year, there has been a 30% decrease in the production of Clifton avocados, leading to higher prices. In the coming days, the harvest of other varieties such as Zutano, Bacon, and Fuerte will begin. The export season has started, with initial shipments made to Russia, Georgia, and Iran. An export to Bulgaria is also planned soon. The target for this year is around 150 million avocados, compared to 100 million last year.

Sevilgen also advised consumers to be more careful when selecting avocados, noting that various varieties are produced in Turkey and it is important to consume fruits harvested at the right time. Early harvesting may result in avocados not ripening properly and spoiling.
