Eggplant is called "Black Money"
The decline in production led to eggplants setting an all-time price record. At wholesale markets, they are sold for 70 lira per kilogram, while at local bazaars, prices reach up to 90 lira.
During winter, the production of many vegetables and fruits decreases, causing prices to rise. Eggplants have become one of the most expensive items. At wholesale markets, they are sold for 70 lira per kilogram, while prices at bazaars reach up to 90 lira. Thus, eggplants set a new price record. Seeing these prices, citizens ironically nicknamed eggplants "Dirty Money."
The Chairman of the Alanya Vegetable and Fruit Distributors Association, Adem Kaya, called the price increase artificial:
"Compared to previous years, eggplant production and planting have decreased. In addition, recent weather conditions have negatively affected yields. There was prolonged rain and little sunlight. As a result, eggplant production dropped significantly, causing prices to rise. However, this is a temporary issue. As the weather warms up, the supply will increase, and prices will drop again. Last year, around this time, eggplants were priced at 40–42 lira per kilogram. Now, given the circumstances, 70 lira is quite normal. Price increases are due to rising costs. Despite official inflation rates of 40–45%, costs for pesticides, fertilizers, labor, electricity, and similar inputs have risen significantly."
DECREASED ACTIVITY AT THE ALANYA MARKET
Kaya also noted reduced activity at the Alanya market:
"With hotels closing, movement in the market has decreased. Our turnover and sales volumes have declined. With colder weather, production has also fallen. During these months, the market faces serious economic challenges."
