"I expect a major earthquake in the Mediterranean" — alarming warnings from Japanese earthquake expert Mirowaki
Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki issued important warnings about Turkey’s earthquake risk. Particularly highlighting the fault line between Adana and Cyprus, Moriwaki emphasized the need for the country to take necessary precautions considering the earthquake reality.
Moriwaki stated that “an earthquake will definitely occur somewhere in Turkey” and pointed out that the country’s significant portion of building stock is illegal, which creates serious risks. He stressed the importance of building inspections, which could help reduce casualties.
Moriwaki also noted that Aydın is one of the provinces at risk of earthquakes, mentioning that the region's soil structure could pose a threat during a quake. He urged the people of Aydın to be careful and take necessary precautions.
According to Moriwaki, Turkey ranks among the 17 most earthquake-prone countries in the world and is third in terms of earthquake-related fatalities. This highlights the need for Turkey to take further preventive measures.
The expert also noted that the western section of the East Anatolian Fault extends from Adana to Cyprus, with a high likelihood of rupture, increasing the earthquake risk in the region.
Using Japan’s earthquake safety measures as an example, Moriwaki stated that Turkey should implement similar practices. In Japan, thanks to building inspections and investments in technological infrastructure, the number of earthquake casualties has been significantly reduced.
