Another Major Success in Surgery in Alanya: Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy Performed for the First Time

The Urology Clinic at Alanya Education and Research Hospital has achieved another significant success in advanced laparoscopic surgery.

As Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University continues to make strong strides in the academic field, it is also adding value to the health sector of Alanya and the surrounding region. For the first time in Alanya, a laparoscopic adrenalectomy surgery was performed, led by Associate Professor Dr. Ali Akkoç, the Head of the Urology Department at the Medical Faculty of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University, and Associate Professor Dr. Murat Topçuoğlu.

Fatma Çınar, a 58-year-old patient who had been monitored for a mass in her left adrenal gland since 2015, was diagnosed with the mass growing to about 6 cm according to the latest radiological evaluation. After consulting with the endocrinology department, it was emphasized that the tumor needed to be removed. After preparations were made and the necessary information provided to the patient, the laparoscopic left adrenalectomy surgery was successfully performed.

Associate Professor Dr. Ali Akkoç shared details about the surgery and the condition: "The adrenal glands are important organs, weighing around 4-5 grams, and they secrete hormones. They are often discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. Hormone-producing and functional tumors can cause symptoms such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and weight gain, and they may be identified during research. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is now considered a standard method for surgical treatment of adrenal gland diseases. This method has many advantages over open surgery, as it only leaves three or four small incisions instead of a large surgical cut. As a result, patients experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and can return to their daily activities more quickly".

Associate Professor Dr. Ali Akkoç emphasized the importance of this being the first laparoscopic adrenalectomy in Alanya, saying: "Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is among the advanced laparoscopic urological surgeries. As a Urology Clinic, we will continue to provide such specialized health services and use advanced medical technologies to improve the quality of life for our patients in Alanya and the region".
