This Virus Called 'The Most Severe of Its Kind': Almost All Who Visit Emergency Rooms Have the Same Illness

With the cooling of the weather, upper respiratory tract infections are becoming more common. Between December 1, 2024, and January 16, 2025, tests at a private hospital revealed that 78.3% of patients who presented with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms tested positive for Influenza A virus. Experts noted that Influenza A symptoms include body aches and fatigue.

The increased intensity of infections and pediatrics clinics in the winter months is linked to the prevalence of Influenza A. In tests conducted on patients with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms at a private hospital, it was found that the most common virus was Influenza A. 78.3% of the samples collected from patients tested positive for Influenza A, while other viruses were found at much lower rates.

Importance of PCR Tests: PCR tests are crucial for accurate diagnosis in individuals with respiratory infection symptoms. Associate Professor Dr. Buket Baddal stated, "Accurate diagnosis can be made with swab samples taken from individuals showing symptoms like fever, cough, and runny nose. This is a critical method for monitoring outbreaks and preventing their spread."

Mask and Hand Hygiene

Dr. Baddal emphasized that respiratory infections spread via droplets, saying, "Wearing masks in closed and crowded spaces is an effective way to prevent transmission. Additionally, hand hygiene should be practiced, and hands should be washed frequently with soap."

Vaccine Warning for Risk Groups

The importance of vaccinating high-risk groups against Influenza A was highlighted. Individuals over 65, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and children are advised to get the flu vaccine. It was noted that vaccinations are typically given in September and October, but the opportunity to get vaccinated continues until the end of March.

Symptoms of Influenza A: The common symptoms of Influenza A are:

Fever: Ranges from 38-41°C

Headache and fatigue

Dry cough and sore throat

Runny nose and muscle aches

In healthy individuals, symptoms typically subside within a week, though fatigue may last longer. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, particularly in preventing complications in high-risk groups.

Preventive Measures to Stay Healthy: To protect against increased infections in winter, the following precautions are recommended:

Wearing masks in closed spaces

Washing hands frequently

Paying attention to the vaccination process.
