8 Hidden Factors Harmful to the Heart

Heart diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and they can be caused by many factors that might not seem related to the heart at first glance.

Conditions like gum problems, loneliness, sleep apnea, or air pollution can even threaten the heart. Cardiologist Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan emphasizes that "to maintain heart health, all risks should be well understood and preventive measures should be taken. Therefore, it is very important to have a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, quit smoking, limit alcohol consumption, manage stress with techniques such as meditation or yoga, and, most importantly, never neglect annual health screenings."

Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan listed lesser-known factors that can lead to heart health problems, in addition to the more obvious risks like high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity:

Gum diseases

Gum diseases, especially periodontitis, can increase the risk of heart disease. Inflammation in the gums can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream, leading to widespread inflammation in the body, which can pave the way for other diseases. To prevent this, it is important to brush teeth regularly, use dental floss, and undergo annual dental check-ups.

Migraine attacks

Migraine attacks can cause blood vessels to constrict, which increases the likelihood of heart problems, particularly in patients with migraine with aura. Therefore, migraine treatment should not be neglected, and regular doctor visits should not be delayed.

Sleep problems

Sleep apnea, which is when breathing is interrupted during sleep, can raise blood pressure and decrease oxygen levels, which can harm the heart. It is important to control weight, seek treatment for sleep apnea if necessary, and maintain a consistent sleep routine.

Poor gut health

The gut, home to billions of bacteria, is critical for both physical and mental health. Poor nutrition can disrupt the balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut, leading to various health issues. A diet rich in probiotics, prebiotics, and fiber should be preferred.

Excessive exercise

While physical exercise is usually beneficial for heart health, excessive exercise, such as long-distance running, can cause stress on the heart. A balanced and regular exercise program should be followed.

Air pollution

Polluted air can cause vessel blockages and increase blood pressure, which triggers heart diseases. When air quality is poor, time spent outdoors should be limited, and air filters should be used indoors.

Stress

Chronic stress and anxiety, like many other health problems, pose a significant risk to the heart. The elevated pressure caused by stress adds extra strain on the heart. Stress management techniques like meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises should be practiced, and if self-control is difficult, seeking help from a psychologist is advised. Loneliness and social isolation can also increase stress hormones and trigger heart diseases. It is important to strengthen social bonds by trying new hobbies and interacting with others.

Early menopause

Menopause occurring before the age of 40 can increase the risk of heart disease due to the drop in estrogen levels, which negatively affects blood vessels. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and seeking medical advice for controlled hormone therapy are essential.
