Abandoned Dog is Recovering with Treatment at the Shelter

A Belgian Malinois dog, abandoned by its owner with parvovirus (bloody diarrhea), is recovering thanks to the treatment at the Kaşlı Temporary Animal Shelter operated by the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality. After intensive treatment, the 2-month-old dog has regained its strength and has been named "Zeus" due to its remarkable will to live and resilience.

Within the Agricultural Services Department, the Kaşlı Temporary Animal Shelter, which serves stray animals, received a Belgian Malinois dog abandoned by its owner. Tests revealed that the dog had parvovirus, and veterinarians and health technicians began treatment. The dog, which had become weak, could not lift its head, and was unable to eat due to the illness, showed rapid improvement after the treatment started. Due to its struggle for life, determination, and strength, the shelter staff named the dog "Zeus." The dog can now stand and eat its food. The latest viral infection tests came back negative, and since the dog is not yet one year old, it has not been neutered and is awaiting adoption.

"He Couldn’t Stand Up"

Mürşide Gökturna, a veterinary health technician at the Kaşlı Temporary Animal Shelter, said that the Belgian Malinois she named Zeus was abandoned at the shelter by its owner. Gökturna noted that the dog arrived with a viral illness, explaining, "Through a rapid test kit and blood analysis, we determined that he had bloody diarrhea. There was severe vomiting and an incredible loss of fluids. He couldn’t stand up, couldn’t support his body. We immediately started treatment." Gökturna emphasized that viral infections require intensive and detailed treatment, saying, "Zeus is undergoing a rigorous treatment process. It will be a long-term treatment."

"Responded to Treatment"

Gökturna noted that the risk of losing a patient is high with viral infections like parvovirus and diseases of young animals. However, she expressed optimism that, thanks to the treatments provided at the shelter, Zeus has a high chance of survival. Gökturna stated that Zeus's condition is improving: "Currently, Zeus is in a better and more stable condition. He has responded to the treatment. He is eating his food and drinking water. The follow-up tests came back negative. It is heartening to see him alive and active. Previously, he couldn’t stand at all due to the incredible weakness in his muscles caused by the disease. He was very weak and had lost a lot of fluids. We continuously provided supplements through infusions. Now he can eat, is active, and is trying to walk." Gökturna added that Zeus will be put up for adoption once his treatment is complete.
