A panel and discussion were organized at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKÜ) as part of the fight against violence against women.

On November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a discussion and panel were held at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University by the Women's and Family Studies Application and Research Center (ALKÜKAM) in cooperation with Alanya Municipality and the Alanya Social Services Directorate.

In the discussion titled “The Value of Women and Strong Women” and the panel on “Combating Violence Against Women,” ALKÜKAM Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meltem Akca made a speech highlighting the importance of the day's theme. She emphasized that the university works on combating violence against women, collaborating with various institutions and organizations, primarily the Ministry of Family and Social Services.

Akca also mentioned, “With the support of our Rector Prof. Dr. Kenan Ahmet Türkdoğan, we have a safe university environment under the theme of a violence-free campus and a women-friendly university.” In the first event of the day, Alanya Municipality’s Family, Women Support, and Disabled Coordination Center Coordinator, Psychologist Esra Yemez, spoke in the discussion titled “The Value of Women, Strong Women,” addressing important topics such as violence against women and emphasizing the importance of the fight against it.

In the afternoon, in the panel moderated by Dr. Lecturer Member Serpil Bardakçı Tosun, information on violence against women was shared. Bardakçı Tosun stated, "Violence is unfortunately a social problem that has existed in various forms across all political, economic, social, and psychological spheres throughout human history. Whether real or potential, the phenomenon of violence significantly harms individuals, disturbs their quality of life, and creates negative effects on the targeted individuals or groups. Women and children, who are heavily subjected to violence, face physical, psychological, social, and economic negative outcomes," she said.

Özen Gürbüz, a sociologist from Alanya Social Services Directorate, also provided an important evaluation on dating violence, addressing it in all its aspects. Gürbüz shared striking statistics from the "Youth's Perceptions of Gender and Dating Violence" survey, which was conducted with the participation of 3,153 students.

Addressing the data on young people's perceptions of dating violence, Gürbüz stated, "Three out of every four young people think that the young person who is being abused can easily end the relationship; two out of every five young people believe that verbal abuse is not as harmful as physical violence; two out of every five believe that jealousy is a sign of love; and one out of every two young people thinks that generally, uneducated people apply violence. 21% of the young people think that making hurtful jokes/teasing in public is not violence; 65% think that controlling/limiting whom they are with, where they are, and what they do is not violence; 16% think that constantly yelling/insulting is not violence; 7% think that threatening is not violence."

In the session where the legal aspect of violence against women was discussed in detail, Lawyer Celal Safa Şenol provided important information to the guests present in the room. Through examples, Şenol shared comprehensive details about the units victims of violence could apply to and their legal rights.
