Motorcycle alarm in Alanya: The numbers are frighteningly high
The number of people admitted to the hospital due to motorcycle accidents in Alanya saw a significant increase in 2024. Compared to last year, the cases doubled, reaching 1,177 in the first 10 months of the year.
Chief Physician of Alanya Training and Research Hospital, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Güler, stated that motorcycle accidents have shown a notable increase compared to previous years. Assoc. Prof. Güler explained that in 2023, there were 558 cases of motorcycle accidents admitted to the hospital, and in 2024, this number rose to 1,177.
ALANYA LEADS IN MOTORCYCLE USAGE
Assoc. Prof. Güler highlighted the increasing motorcycle usage across Turkey, noting that Alanya is one of the districts with the highest motorcycle usage intensity. Güler said, "Motorcycles are preferred for their affordability, ability to reduce traffic problems, and their widespread use in professions like courier services."
RISKS OF MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS
Chief Physician Güler emphasized that the risk of death in motorcycle accidents is 37 times higher than in other vehicle accidents: “Motorcycles lack a protective shield. Therefore, drivers are in direct contact with the external environment. Serious injuries such as head trauma, brain injuries, and internal organ damage are frequently observed.”
IMPORTANCE OF HELMET AND PROTECTIVE GEAR
Assoc. Prof. Güler warned motorcycle users about the necessity of wearing helmets and protective gear:
"Wearing a helmet, appropriate protective clothing, and reflective gear for night rides is crucial. Additionally, following traffic rules saves lives. Always take the necessary precautions for your safety."
CALL FOR MORE CONSCIOUS BEHAVIOR
Drawing attention to the tragic incidents in emergency services, Chief Physician Güler called on citizens to adhere to traffic rules. “To prevent families from experiencing sorrow, everyone must act more responsibly,” he concluded.
