Taken in Alanya, sent to Ankara: mandatory for all couples

Although the increasing number of babies born with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) raises concerns, this condition can now be detected in advance. In 2024, the SMA test, which has been made mandatory for all couples planning to marry, was conducted on 2,934 people.
Pre-marriage SMA tests continue to be carried out free of charge in Alanya. In Turkey, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) occurs in one out of every 6,000 births, prompting the Ministry of Health to enforce strict preventive measures against the disease.
With the rising number of SMA cases in newborns, authorities have made the test mandatory for all couples. Health officials emphasize that the test is free of charge and aim to educate and warn future parents about the risks associated with the disease.
2,934 TESTS IN 2024
The District Health Director, Nadir Aldemir, provided details about the SMA screening:
“In our Family Health Centers, we conduct mandatory SMA screening for all couples planning to marry. In 2024, 2,934 people underwent SMA testing.
Among them, 79 individuals tested potentially positive, and they were referred to genetic diagnosis centers for further evaluation. Samples are collected at Family Health Centers and sent to Ankara. After screening, results are shared with the couples, and necessary actions are taken accordingly.
Couples should be aware of this condition and ensure they get tested.”
