Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKÜ) continues to increase its support for research related to the ancient and recent history of the region. In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, a "Gladiator Statue" was placed at the entrance of the ancient city of Kibyra, famous for its gladiatorial combat. The statue was created by ALKÜ lecturer and member of the Kibyra Excavation Scientific Committee, Serdar Aslan. The design of the statue was inspired by archaeological and epigraphic data found in Kibyra. Lecturer Aslan was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Kibyra Excavation Director Professor Şükrü Özüdoğru.
THE STATUE WILL BECOME ONE OF THE CITY'S SYMBOLS
Kibyra, known for its gladiatorial games held in a grand stadium, was a prominent city in the ancient world. Lecturer Serdar Aslan created an imposing gladiator statue, standing 2.60 meters tall, which now greets visitors to the city. The statue was modeled after a clay figure of a gladiator discovered in Kibyra. Professor Şükrü Özüdoğru stated: "In order to highlight Kibyra's fame in the ancient world for its gladiators and gladiatorial contests, and to promote the city, our team member, ALKÜ Lecturer Serdar Aslan, has created a modern gladiator statue. The archaeological and epigraphic findings from Kibyra served as the primary inspiration for the statue. We thank Lecturer Aslan for his dedicated efforts and wish him success in his future work."
