Will there be a new earthquake in Alanya? New statements from Professor Görür
Yesterday's 4.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alanya caused significant concern among the local population. According to data from the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, the earthquake occurred in the Hellenic-Cyprus subduction zone. So, is a new earthquake expected in Alanya? What do experts say on the matter? Details are in our report.
IS A NEW EARTHQUAKE EXPECTED IN ALANYA?
Geologist and earthquake scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür commented on the Alanya earthquake on his social media account. Görür stated:
“A 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Alanya in the Hellenic-Cyprus subduction zone. Earthquakes in this region are caused by the subduction of the African Plate beneath the Anatolian Plate. The earthquake occurred on the Anatolian Plate. Best wishes to all.”
These statements by Görür raised questions about the possibility of a larger earthquake in the region. However, experts note that such frequent earthquakes in the area do not necessarily indicate the likelihood of a major event.
WHAT IS THE HELLENIC-CYPRUS SUBDUCTION ZONE?
The Hellenic-Cyprus subduction zone is a geological structure where the African Plate subducts beneath the Anatolian Plate in the north, causing high seismic activity in the region. Earthquakes occurring here are typically related to these tectonic movements. The recent earthquake in Alanya is also associated with this structure.
RECENT EARTHQUAKES AND DATA FROM THE KANDILLI OBSERVATORY
According to the Kandilli Observatory, tremors are being felt not only in Alanya but also in various other regions of the country. For example, frequent earthquakes have been recorded in provinces such as Şanlıurfa, Malatya, Çanakkale, Kastamonu, and Iğdır. Real-time data on all these events can be tracked on the "Recent Earthquakes" page of the Kandilli Observatory.
