In Alanya's neighboring area, oil started flowing from the taps

In Karaman, a neighboring city of Alanya, many residents have recently complained to authorities, claiming that the city’s tap water smells like oil. Following investigations, petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the water. The Karaman Provincial Health Directorate issued an official statement, warning the public about the risks.

Many residents of Karaman noticed a strong petroleum odor from their household taps and reported the issue to the authorities. Concerned about the unusual smell in the drinking water, locals demanded an investigation. As complaints increased, the Karaman Provincial Health Directorate collected samples from the city’s water supply and launched a detailed examination.

PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS DETECTED IN THE WATER

The collected water samples were sent to the National Public Health Reference Laboratory in Ankara. The analysis confirmed the presence of chemical compounds known as petroleum hydrocarbons in the city’s water supply system. Authorities warned that this poses a potential public health risk and issued a critical advisory regarding the use of drinking water.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT: DO NOT DRINK THE WATER

In a statement issued by the Karaman Provincial Health Directorate, officials confirmed that the water from the main reservoir supplying the city does not meet drinking water standards. The statement read:

"According to the regulations on water intended for human consumption, the Provincial Health Directorate monitors the safety of drinking water. Following complaints from residents, a sample was taken from the main water supply network. The analysis revealed that the water contains petroleum hydrocarbons and does not comply with health standards. An urgent official notification has been sent to Karaman Municipality to take immediate action."

USE TAP WATER FOR CLEANING ONLY

Authorities strongly advised residents not to use tap water for drinking or cooking. The statement included the following warning:

"Until test results return to normal, Karaman’s municipal tap water should only be used for general cleaning and hygiene purposes. It should not be consumed, used for cooking, or for oral hygiene such as brushing teeth."
