Prison Comparison in Alanya: Great News – Our Loyal Friends Will Be Rescued

Mayor of Alanya Osman Tarık Özçelik visited the Demirtaş Animal Shelter and Temporary Care Center to inspect the ongoing work. He announced that medical equipment necessary for all types of surgeries would be operational after the Ramadan Bayram holiday. He also stated that animals would be freed from the prison-like ward system and relocated to a new natural habitat.

Since taking office, Mayor Özçelik has taken significant steps regarding stray animals. As part of this initiative, he visited the shelter in Demirtaş, accompanied by the Municipal Veterinary Affairs Director Hasan Sağlamer, veterinarians, and other personnel.

Mayor Özçelik Calls for Adoption of a Cat Rescued from a Fire

A cat that was rescued from a fire in the Cikcilli neighborhood in recent months was handed over to the Alanya Municipality. Mayor Özçelik urged animal lovers to adopt the cat, whose treatment had been completed. He also received information about the cat’s health and thanked the staff for their efforts in saving the animal.

Sağlamer: The Ward System Will Be Abolished

During the tour, Mayor Özçelik received updates from Veterinary Affairs Director Hasan Sağlamer regarding improvements at the shelter.

Sağlamer explained the changes made to create a more natural living space for the animals:

"In our Demirtaş Animal Shelter and Temporary Care Center, there is an area we call a 'natural habitat.' Previously, it consisted of two sections where animals were placed together without proper isolation areas. We have now implemented a new plan: the dogs from the smaller section have been relocated, and the area has been leveled, disinfected, and cleared of diseases. This section will now be divided into five separate parts. Once the new medical equipment arrives, dogs placed in quarantine will undergo blood tests before being introduced into the healthy living area. This will help prevent diseases and outbreaks. Once this section is completed, we will move on to the larger part of the facility and implement the same improvements. Afterward, the animals that were previously confined to prison-like wards will be transferred to this natural habitat following medical check-ups. The wards will only be used for temporary accommodation of newly arrived animals undergoing medical tests. Thus, we will eliminate the distressing image of animals being kept in prison-like conditions. Our Mayor, Mr. Osman Tarık Özçelik, has been providing us with unwavering support in this project, and we sincerely thank everyone involved."

Mayor Özçelik: We Will Be Able to Perform All Types of Surgeries

Mayor Özçelik has instructed that all necessary needs of the shelter be addressed urgently. He announced that after the Ramadan Bayram holiday, all missing medical devices would be installed:

"We have inspected the progress of our planned work at the Demirtaş Animal Shelter and Temporary Care Center, and I would like to thank our colleagues for their efforts. The Mobile Sterilization Unit has been repaired and is now ready for use. We also toured the surgical rooms. Some of the necessary equipment has already been ordered. The Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry is purchasing an X-ray machine, for which we are very grateful. A hematology device, an ultrasound machine, and a laparoscopic surgery system will arrive immediately after the holiday. This will enable us to perform all types of surgeries. Additionally, we have reviewed the plans for expanding the free movement areas for animals and identified the sections that need enlargement. We have also planned the areas we will request from the Forestry Directorate."
