AIDS statement from Alanya: “Early diagnosis is important”
Dr. Sema Tekin Şahin, an Infectious Diseases Specialist at Alanya Education and Research Hospital, drew attention to AIDS to increase the testing rate of individuals engaging in risky behavior, prevent the spread of the virus, and inform people about access to treatment. She provided information about the ways to protect against HIV and AIDS, diagnosis, and treatment processes.
Speaking on World AIDS Day, Dr. Şahin emphasized that HIV/AIDS is one of the most feared diseases in the world due to its contagious nature. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that all sections of society, especially health managers and professionals, have adequate knowledge about HIV infection in order to control it in the community.
Dr. Sema Tekin Şahin said, "World AIDS Day offers a great opportunity for individuals living with HIV and for raising social awareness. So, what is HIV? HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system, reducing the body's ability to fight infections. If untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). However, with proper treatment, HIV can be controlled before it progresses to AIDS. HIV may not show noticeable symptoms in its early stages, which can lead to undetected transmission. Early diagnosis is crucial for protecting the individual's health and preventing the spread of the virus. Getting an HIV test is the first step in learning the virus's presence and beginning proper treatment".
Dr. Şahin emphasized that HIV treatment can be effective with the right medications. "Thanks to early diagnosis and treatment, HIV-positive individuals can live long and healthy lives. Getting tested, starting treatment early, and reducing health risks while living with HIV are the most important steps. It is important to know that HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, blood, or from mother to child. Regular tests and early diagnosis help control HIV. Treatment can reduce the damage HIV causes to the body and prevent its spread. Everyone has a responsibility in the fight against HIV. To protect both our own health and public health, you can get an HIV test at our center, raise awareness, and learn more about HIV".
