Frost hit Alanya: Prices will skyrocket

The cold wave affecting all of Turkey has also made itself felt in Alanya. Due to the drop in temperatures, agricultural production has been negatively impacted, and product prices at the market have risen.
The heavy snowfalls and severe cold that have hit Turkey over the past week have also affected Alanya. To prevent damage to greenhouse crops, farmers burned stoves every night in an effort to protect their products from the cold. However, extreme cold and frost have had a negative impact on many producers. The President of the Alanya Chamber of Agriculture, Tahir Göktepe, stated that 55-60 decares of greenhouse areas were affected by frost. The President of the Alanya Market Association, Adem Kaya, mentioned that the cold weather and heavy snowfall, which blocked roads, caused prices in the market to rise.
"Damage assessment is ongoing"
The President of the Alanya Chamber of Agriculture, Tahir Göktepe, stated that damage assessment efforts for the agricultural areas affected by frost are still underway: "So far, we have identified damage to approximately 55-60 decares of greenhouses. We will see in the coming days how cold weather will impact prices. Our farmers were already selling at cost price. For the first time, tomatoes are being sold above their cost. However, producers are not responsible for the high prices in the markets".
"We tried to protect our crops day and night"
"Our farmers did their best to protect the crops they supply to the market. We do not complain about what comes from God; with patience, we will continue to produce day and night.
"I want to thank our farmers who fought against frost for four nights, taking all necessary precautions. I also express my condolences to those who suffered losses despite all the measures taken".
"Prices will continue to rise"
The President of the Alanya Market Association, Adem Kaya, stated: "The cold weather has driven prices up. Tomatoes, which were 18-20 TL, are now 30 TL. Eggplants have risen from 45 TL to 60 TL. Cucumbers, which were in the 28-30 TL range, are now 40 TL. Beans have gone from 100 TL to 140 TL. All types of peppers have increased by 10-20 TL. This price increase will continue. Since demand will rise during Ramadan, prices will also continue to increase. We expect price increases to slow after March 15 and to decline towards April. However, everything depends on weather conditions".
