In Antalya, historic mosques have become residences! The sight of drug addicts is deeply distressing

The Muratpaşa Mosque, which has a history of nearly 500 years, has become a place of residence for drug addicts and alcohol users. Recent footage, reportedly taken over the last two months, shows the distressing moments of drug addicts in a pitiful state.

The Muratpaşa Mosque, built in 1570 and one of the oldest Ottoman structures, has recently become a hotspot for drug addicts and substance users. During the day, the mosque's courtyard, the restroom area, and the stairs leading down to the storage section are used by drug users. Local shopkeepers and mosque attendees are disturbed by these scenes. Footage recorded at various locations within the mosque over the past two months shows drug users and moments when they are experiencing crises due to substance use. Citizens report that dozens of drug and alcohol addicts come to the mosque during the day, and although they report it to the authorities, these individuals are only removed temporarily and then return. Videos recorded by citizens' mobile phones show scenes of a person using a syringe and another person in a state of unconsciousness due to drugs.

"All of them are here in the evenings"

Saadettin Boğa, who has lived in Antalya for 50 years and comes to Muratpaşa Mosque for prayers due to its proximity to his residence, mentioned that he has frequently seen such individuals recently. “They have made this place their home. They come here and sleep. In the evening, look, they are all here. They sleep with their bedding. They come out of poverty. They become destitute and wretched. The mosque is large, with entrances from every side, so they even climb over the walls. Security can’t do anything; they can only protect themselves. Recently, five people fought with security. The security guard ran inside, and they stabbed one of the attackers,” he said.
