These Foods Delay the Signs of Aging

Expert dietitian Pakize Gizem Akgül stated that “functional foods delay the signs of aging.”

She explained that skin health is influenced by various factors such as age, stress, and nutrition. "Adequate intake of vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as trace elements such as zinc and selenium, is important for the immune system, which is related to skin health," she said.

To maintain healthy and glowing skin, external skincare treatments alone are not enough; food choices also play a significant role. Diet has been found to play an important part in the internal nourishment of the skin, with studies showing that consumed foods influence the development and prevention of common skin conditions.

"Skin Health Depends on Many Factors"

Dietitian Pakize Gizem Akgül spoke about skin health. She pointed out that the structure of the skin varies according to genetic factors and environmental influences. She continued:

"Skin health depends on age, gender, diet, stress levels, lifestyle, and many other factors. Protection against UV rays, air pollution, cigarette smoke, stress, fatigue, and other environmental factors can also become new players. These factors affect the health and appearance of the skin, highlighting the importance of regular skincare."

"Healthy, Balanced Diet is Important for Skin Health"

Dietitian Akgül mentioned that clinical studies have shown that these functional foods play a "delaying role in the signs of aging." She further explained:

"Research indicates that vitamins A, C, D, and E, along with trace elements such as zinc and selenium, are vital for the human immune system and play an important role in reducing the risk of infections. Therefore, consuming these nutrients in adequate amounts is crucial for a healthy immune system."

"It is well-known that healthy, adequate, and balanced nutrition has long been linked to skin health. Conditions such as dryness, acne, aging, and even sun resistance can be influenced by diet."

"Phenolic Compounds Can Delay Aging"

Akgül also addressed phenolic compounds found in plant-based foods. "Some studies have shown that phenolic compounds, naturally found in fruits, vegetables, grains, and various plant products, can help delay or even prevent age-related deterioration in skin appearance and function. These compounds are found in large amounts in grains, oilseeds, and legumes."

"Fruits and Vegetables Are an Important Source of Nutrition"

Listing foods beneficial for skin health, Akgül explained that nuts such as hazelnuts, almonds, and walnuts contain polyphenols due to their antioxidant properties. She also emphasized that fruits and vegetables are an important source of nutrition for skin health:

"Thanks to the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants they contain, these foods help repair damage to the skin and give it a healthy appearance. Therefore, these fruits and vegetables can be considered ideal sources of natural antioxidants."
