Producers in Alanya are in revolt
In Alanya, avocado producers are going through difficult times due to early harvesting and falling prices. With the early warming of the weather, the ripening process of avocados has accelerated, leading to earlier-than-normal harvesting. The increased supply has caused prices to drop to 15-18 Turkish lira.
The drop in avocado and banana prices in Alanya only affects producers; consumers do not benefit from any price advantage. According to new research, avocado and banana prices in markets in regions like Istanbul, Ankara, Konya, Kayseri, and the Black Sea hover around 60-70 Turkish lira, putting pressure on both producers and consumers. Agreements between intermediaries and traders keep prices under control while leaving producers in a tough spot.
Criticism of Agricultural Chambers
Why Aren't They Intervening? Producers are reacting against the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers and local agricultural chambers. They believe that this system, in which intermediaries profit, is not being monitored and criticize the agricultural chambers for their indifference to the situation. According to producers, the agricultural chambers may also benefit from this cycle of profit.
Expert Warning
Delay Harvesting Experts recommend that avocado producers postpone their harvesting dates as much as possible to prevent prices from falling further. They point out that early harvested products lower prices and indicate that a planned harvest schedule can help stabilize prices.
